Vibration Analysis in Machine Tools

Precision machine tools such as lathes, grinding, lapping and milling machines are used widely in metal cutting production processes. Some require very high precision therefore monitoring of vibration is essential. Excessive vibration can impact product quality of the finished goods. It is also a typical indication of excessive tool wear and improper feed or speed settings. Additionally, collision can cause damage to the tool bit, the part or even worse the metal cutting machine itself. Collision needs to be minimized and avoided at all times.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT)

VAWTs can rotate at different rotational speeds depending on the wind conditions. Even the well-designed ones that are protected from vibration avoid excessive vibration at resonance frequencies. Typically this behavior has high amplitudes and can auto-amplify. Resonance leads to deflection on the wind blades that can drastically reduce turbine life. Traditional vibration monitoring solutions are not adapted for this application since they generate false alarms and stop the turbine every time vibration on the mast is high. These false alarms lead to reduction of energy generation and turbine efficiency. For these applications, detection of resonance is a must and only then is alarm and action is required. For this application, Sequoia developed the SeTAC W2T. The W2T is a smart and inexpensive device developed to work in external environment (under raining and lighting environments), and able to simultaneously check the vibration on two axes and to stop the turbine only when resonance vibration is detected.

Vibration Analysis in Civil and Construction Works

Vibration is an important phenomenon in civil and construction works due to safety reason. For example, if the vibration reaches the resonance point it can cause the bridge to collapse as have happened in the past. Therefore, civil and construction work requires careful assessment and monitoring of vibration so that the vibration will not affect the safety of the structure. Apart from that, during the development of civil and construction projects, vibration analysis is needed to ensure that the vibration parameters induced by the new constructions do not interfere with pre-existing structures.

Vibration Analysis in Industrial Plants

Most of the large industrial plant today relies on specialized and expensive machines. Typically, these machines have rotating components like motors, pumps, fans, turbines, gear boxes, rollers, engines, compressors and many more. During normal operation of these components, they will generate certain vibration frequency according to their rotating speed. Once an abnormal vibration appears, it is a good indication of problems with the rotating elements.
